FROM 'EUGENE ONIEGIN 'A
-
-
Yes foes How many days bethink youB
Since hatred stepped the two betweenC
And since in hours of thought and leisureD
At work at table they have beenE
As comrades Now with purpose dreadF
Like men in mutual loathing bredF
Each plans as though in broadest dayG
A heavy nightmare on him layG
The other's downfall in his heartH
Oh could they smile but once while stillI
Their hands are pure from deed of illI
And then their sev'ral ways departH
But worldly hate like worldly fameJ
Shrinks at the breath of worldly shameJ
-
-
Now come togetherD
Calmly coldlyK
Not aiming yet with haughty glanceL
And tread assured and light though measuredM
The combatants four steps advanceL
Four steps to death whereon EugeneC
Still forward moving o'er the greenC
The other likewise first beganN
To raise his weapon fix his manN
N ine steps now of the fateful questO
Were counted Lensky with a frownP
His left eye closed took aim when downP
Oniegin's thumb the trigger prestO
Reverse the sand glass Lensky sighedQ
No more and let his pistol glideQ
-
-
He sought his breast with clutching fingersR
He fell his glance grew dim and stillI
It spoke of death alone not tormentS
As when upon some eastern hillI
All sparkling in the morning lightT
The snow wreath vanishes from sightT
Oniegin suddenly a coldU
With horror saw his shot had toldU
He hastened o'er the poet's formV
He stooped he called his name too lateW
He was no more untimely fateW
The flower had perished in the stormV
The music on the broken lyreX
And on the altar stone the fireD
-
-
And there he lay How unfamiliarD
Upon his brow the languid graceY
Beneath his breast the ball had pierced himZ
The smoking blood ran down apaceY
Thence where a few brief moments pastA2
The pulse of life was bounding fastA2
Where hate and hope and love were strongB2
And warm emotions wont to throngB2
The heart is now a house bereftC2
Of former inmates every floorD2
Is dark and still for evermoreD2
With dusty panes The host has leftC2
And whither went he Who shall sayG
His very trace is swept awayG
-
-
To write an epigram a sharp oneE2
Your stupid foe to irritateW
Is very nice To see him lowerD
His sullen horns still obstinateF2
And nolens volens in the glassG2
With shame behold himself and passG2
Twere nicer still the fool should heK
Stand there and gape ' 'Tis meant for me '-
And silently to dig your foeH2
An honoured grave to aim with careI2
Your mark the pallid forehead thereI2
A generous distance off we knowH2
Is nicest But to see him fallJ2
And lie is scarcely nice at allJ2
-
-
We'll just suppose my friend your pistol Has stretched a young acquaintance deadF
Because of forward look or answerD
Because some idle thing he saidF
Had stung you o'er the wine last nightT
Or even called you out to fightT
Himself in boyish anger wellK2
What kind of feeling pray you tellK2
Came o'er you with a whelming rushL2
When laid before you on the groundM2
Without a motion or a soundM2
He stiffens in the sudden hushL2
When dumb with blinded stare he liesN2
Stone deaf to your despairing criesN2
