- | |
I write to you when that is said | B |
What more is left for me to say | C |
Now you are free I know too well | D |
To heap contempt upon my head | B |
Yet if some sparks of pity dwell | D |
Within your breast you'll surely not | E |
Abandon me to my hard lot | E |
When first I saw you I desired | F |
To hold my peace my shame 'tis true | G |
Would ne'er have been revealed to you | G |
Had life's conditions but inspired | F |
One gleam of hope that you would come | H |
To see us in our country home | I |
From time to time so that I might | J |
Hear but one word catch but one tone | A |
And live by dreaming on alone | A |
Till our next meeting day and night | J |
But then it seemed there was no hope | K |
Our rustic quiet bored you so | L |
Folk said you were a misanthrope | K |
And we we do not make a show | L |
You found us narrow in our scope | K |
- | |
Why did you come to visit us | M |
I n this forgotten quiet place | N |
I need not have been tortured thus | M |
If I had never seen your face | N |
My inexperienced heart maybe | O |
Had grown resigned to this dull life | P |
And future years had brought to me | O |
Some other love my destiny | O |
An honoured mother and true wife | P |
Another's Nay to none on earth | Q |
Could I have given this heart of mine | A |
By the decree of the Most High | R |
And by Heaven's willing I am thine | A |
- | |
Allotted unto you was I | R |
E'en from the moment of my birth | Q |
And loyal to my future fate | S |
And God I know sent you to be | O |
My champion and my advocate | T |
Till the grave closes over me | O |
- | |
Oft in my dreams you did appear | U |
I loved you then before the days | V |
When palpably I saw you here | W |
I languished in your wondrous gaze | V |
And in my heart your voice rang clear | U |
Long since It was no dream to me | O |
You came at once I understood | X |
This swift confusion in my blood | Y |
While my thoughts whispered ' Lo 'tis he ' | - |
Was it not true Am I not sure | Z |
You spoke with me in hours of peace | A2 |
When I went visiting my poor | B2 |
Or when I strove by prayer to ease | C2 |
The pain in which my spirit toss'd | D2 |
- | |
Was not your image wont to rise | E2 |
A vision sweet too quickly lost | D2 |
To light my gloom Did not mine eyes | E2 |
See you bend gently o'er my bed | B |
Were not some words low whispered | F |
Of love and hope Now in what guise | E2 |
Come you As guardian angel good | X |
Or tempter in some wily mood | F2 |
speak and set my doubts at rest | G2 |
What if all this should prove at best | G2 |
The empty dream more light than froth | H2 |
Of a heart simple and untried | I2 |
Well be it so But from henceforth | J2 |
I must to you my fate confide | I2 |
Must weep my tears about your feet | K2 |
And for your sheltering love entreat | K2 |
Picture me now I sit alone | A |
With none to heed or guess what ails | L2 |
And now my very reason fails | L2 |
I wait for you One glance of yours | M2 |
Fresh hope unto my heart restores | N2 |
Or else the cruel dream comes back | O2 |
Of merited contempt Alack | O2 |
- | |
She seals the letter | P2 |
- | |
'Tis done I scarce dare read it through | G |
But overcome with shame and fright | K2 |
I trust my honour now to you | G |
And dare to think I trust aright | K2 |
