FROM 'EUGENE ONIEGIN'A
-
I write to you when that is saidB
What more is left for me to sayC
Now you are free I know too wellD
To heap contempt upon my headB
Yet if some sparks of pity dwellD
Within your breast you'll surely notE
Abandon me to my hard lotE
When first I saw you I desiredF
To hold my peace my shame 'tis trueG
Would ne'er have been revealed to youG
Had life's conditions but inspiredF
One gleam of hope that you would comeH
To see us in our country homeI
From time to time so that I mightJ
Hear but one word catch but one toneA
And live by dreaming on aloneA
Till our next meeting day and nightJ
But then it seemed there was no hopeK
Our rustic quiet bored you soL
Folk said you were a misanthropeK
And we we do not make a showL
You found us narrow in our scopeK
-
Why did you come to visit usM
I n this forgotten quiet placeN
I need not have been tortured thusM
If I had never seen your faceN
My inexperienced heart maybeO
Had grown resigned to this dull lifeP
And future years had brought to meO
Some other love my destinyO
An honoured mother and true wifeP
Another's Nay to none on earthQ
Could I have given this heart of mineA
By the decree of the Most HighR
And by Heaven's willing I am thineA
-
Allotted unto you was IR
E'en from the moment of my birthQ
And loyal to my future fateS
And God I know sent you to beO
My champion and my advocateT
Till the grave closes over meO
-
Oft in my dreams you did appearU
I loved you then before the daysV
When palpably I saw you hereW
I languished in your wondrous gazeV
And in my heart your voice rang clearU
Long since It was no dream to meO
You came at once I understoodX
This swift confusion in my bloodY
While my thoughts whispered ' Lo 'tis he '-
Was it not true Am I not sureZ
You spoke with me in hours of peaceA2
When I went visiting my poorB2
Or when I strove by prayer to easeC2
The pain in which my spirit toss'dD2
-
Was not your image wont to riseE2
A vision sweet too quickly lostD2
To light my gloom Did not mine eyesE2
See you bend gently o'er my bedB
Were not some words low whisperedF
Of love and hope Now in what guiseE2
Come you As guardian angel goodX
Or tempter in some wily moodF2
speak and set my doubts at restG2
What if all this should prove at bestG2
The empty dream more light than frothH2
Of a heart simple and untriedI2
Well be it so But from henceforthJ2
I must to you my fate confideI2
Must weep my tears about your feetK2
And for your sheltering love entreatK2
Picture me now I sit aloneA
With none to heed or guess what ailsL2
And now my very reason failsL2
I wait for you One glance of yoursM2
Fresh hope unto my heart restoresN2
Or else the cruel dream comes backO2
Of merited contempt AlackO2
-
She seals the letterP2
-
'Tis done I scarce dare read it throughG
But overcome with shame and frightK2
I trust my honour now to youG
And dare to think I trust arightK2
