To Mrs. M. B. On Her Birthday Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDCCCCCEEFFCCCCGH

Oh be thou blest with all that Heav'n can sendA
Long Health long Youth long Pleasure and a FriendA
Not with those Toys the female world admireB
Riches that vex and Vanities that tireC
With added years if Life bring nothing newD
But like a Sieve let ev'ry blessing thro'C
Some joy still lost as each vain year runs o'erC
And all we gain some sad Reflection moreC
Is that a Birth Day 'tis alas too clearC
'Tis but the funeral of the former yearC
Let Joy or Ease let Affluence or ContentE
And the gay Conscience of a life well spentE
Calm ev'ry thought inspirit ev'ry graceF
Glow in thy heart and smile upon thy faceF
Let day improve on day and year on yearC
Without a Pain a Trouble or a FearC
Till Death unfelt that tender frame destroyC
In some soft Dream or Extasy of joyC
Peaceful sleep out the Sabbath of the TombG
And wake to Raptures in a Life to comeH
