The Riddle Of The World Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFGHIIJJKK

Know then thyself presume not God to scanA
The proper study of Mankind is ManA
Placed on this isthmus of a middle stateB
A Being darkly wise and rudely greatB
With too much knowledge for the Sceptic sideC
With too much weakness for the Stoic's prideC
He hangs between in doubt to act or restD
In doubt to deem himself a God or BeastE
In doubt his mind and body to preferF
Born but to die and reas'ning but to errG
Whether he thinks to little or too muchH
Chaos of Thought and Passion all confus'dI
Still by himself abus'd or disabus'dI
Created half to rise and half to fallJ
Great Lord of all things yet a prey to allJ
Sole judge of truth in endless error hurl'dK
The glory jest and riddle of the worldK
