Ye nymphs of Solyma begin the songA
To heavenly themes sublimer strains belongA
The mossy fountains and the sylvan shadesB
The dreams of Pindus and the Aonian maidsB
Delight no more O thou my voice inspireC
Who touched Isaiah's hallowed lips with fireD
-
Rapt into future times the bard begunE
A virgin shall conceive a Virgin bear a sonE
From Jesse's root behold a branch ariseF
Whose sacred flower with fragrance fills the skiesF
The ethereal Spirit o'er its leaves shall moveG
And on its top descend the mystic DoveH
Ye heavens from high the dewy nectar pourI
And in soft silence shed the kindly showerD
The sick and weak the healing Plant shall aidJ
From storms a shelter and from heat a shadeJ
All crimes shall cease and ancient fraud shall failK
Returning justice lift aloft her scaleK
Peace o'er the world her olive wand extendL
And white robed innocence from heaven descendL
-
Swift fly the years and rise the expected mornM
O spring to light auspicious Babe be bornM
See nature hastes her earliest wreaths to bringN
WIth all the incense of the breathing springN
See lofty Lebanon his head advanceO
See nodding forests on the mountains danceO
See spicy clouds from lowly Sharon riseF
And Carmel's flowery top perfumes the skiesF
Hark a glad voice the lonely desart cheersP
Prepare the way a God a God appearsP
A God a God the vocal hills replyQ
The rocks proclaim the approaching DeityR
Lo earth receives him from the bending skiesF
Sink down ye mountains and ye vallies riseF
With heads declined ye cedars homage payS
Be smooth ye rocks ye rapid floods give wayS
The Saviour comes by ancient bards foretoldT
Hear him ye deaf and all ye blind beholdT
He from thick films shall purge the visual rayS
And on the sightless eye ball pour the dayS
'Tis he the obstructed paths of sound shall clearU
The dumb shall sing the lame his crutch foregoV
And leap exulting like the bounding roeV
No sigh no murmer the wide world shall hearW
From every face he wipes off every tearX
In adamantine chains shall death be boundY
And hell's grim tyrant feel the eternal woundY
As the good shepherd tends his fleecy careX
Seeks freshest pastures and the purest airX
Explores the lost the wandering sheep directsZ
By day o'ersees them and by night protectsZ
The tender lambs he raises in his armsA2
Feeds from his hand and in his bosom warmsB2
Thus shall mankind his guardian care engageC2
The promis'd father of the future ageC2
No more shall nation against nation riseF
Nor ardent warriors meet with hateful eyesF
Nor fields with gleaming steel be cover'd o'erD
The brazen trumpets kindle rage no moreI
But useless lances into scythes shall bendL
And the broad faulchion in a plough share endL
Then palaces shall rise the joyful sonE
Shall finish what his short liv'd fire begunE
Their vines a shadow to their race shall yieldD2
And the same hand that sow'd shall reap the fieldD2
The swain in barren desarts with surpriseF
Sees lillies spring and sudden verdure riseF
And starts amidst the thirsty wilds to hearW
New falls of water murmuring in his earW
On rifted rocks the dragon's late abodesF
The green reed trembles and the bulrush nodsF
Waste sandy vallies once perplex'd with thornM
The spiry fir and shapely box adornM
The leafless shrubs the flow'ring palms succeedE2
And odorous myrtle to the noisome weedE2
The lambs with wolves shall grace the verdant meadE2
And boys in flow'ry bands the tyger leadF2
The steer and lion at one crib shall meetG2
And harmless serpents lick the pilgrim's feetG2
The smiling infant in his hand shall takeH2
The crested basilisk and speckled snakeH2
Pleas'd the green lustres of the scales surveyS
And with their forky tongues shall innocently playS
-
Rise crown'd with light imperial Salem riseF
Exalt thy tow'ry head and lift thy eyesF
See a long race thy spacious courts adornM
See future sons and daughters yet unbornM
In crowding ranks on ev'ry side ariseF
Demanding life impatient for the skiesF
See barb'rous nations at thy gates attendL
Walk in thy light and in thy temple bendL
See thy bright altars throng'd with prostrate kingsF
And heap'd with products of Sabaean springsF
For thee Idume's spicy forests blowV
And seeds of gold in Ophir's mountains glowV
See heav'n its sparkling portals wide displayS
And break upon thee in a flood of dayS
No more the rising sun shall gild the mornM
Nor ev'ning Cynthia fill her silver hornM
But lost dissolv'd in thy superior raysF
One tide of glory one unclouded blazeF
O'erflow thy courts the Light Himself shall shineI2
Reveal'd and God's eternal day be thineI2
The seas shall waste the skies in smoke decayS
Rocks fall to dust and mountains melt awayS
But fix'd his word his saving pow'r remainsF
Thy realm for ever lasts thy own Messiah reignsF
