In vain in vain the all composing HourB
Resistless falls the Muse obeys the Pow'rC
She comes she comes the sable Throne beholdD
Of Night prim val and of Chaos oldD
Before her Fancy's gilded clouds decayE
And all its varying Rain bows die awayE
Wit shoots in vain its momentary firesF
The meteor drops and in a flash expiresF
As one by one at dread Medea's strainG
The sick'ning stars fade off th' ethereal plainG
As Argus' eyes by Hermes' wand opprestD
Clos'd one by one to everlasting restD
Thus at her felt approach and secret mightD
Art after Art goes out and all is NightD
See skulking Truth to her old cavern fledD
Mountains of Casuistry heap'd o'er her headD
Philosophy that lean'd on Heav'n beforeH
Shrinks to her second cause and is no moreH
Physic of Metaphysic begs defenceI
And Metaphysic calls for aid on SenseI
See Mystery to Mathematics flyJ
In vain they gaze turn giddy rave and dieJ
Religion blushing veils her sacred firesF
And unawares Morality expiresF
For public Flame nor private dares to shineK
Nor human Spark is left nor Glimpse divineK
Lo thy dread Empire CHAOS is restor'dD
Light dies before thy uncreating wordD
Thy hand great Anarch lets the curtain fallL
And universal Darkness buries AllL
