Summer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEDDFFDDCCDDDD GHIJKKLLMHDDNNSee what delights in sylvan scenes appear | A |
Descending Gods have found Elysium here | B |
In woods bright Venus with Adonis stray'd | C |
And chaste Diana haunts the forest shade | C |
Come lovely nymph and bless the silent hours | D |
When swains from shearing seek their nightly bow'rs | D |
When weary reapers quit the sultry field | E |
And crown'd with corn their thanks to Ceres yield | E |
This harmless grove no lurking viper hides | D |
But in my breast the serpent Love abides | D |
Here bees from blossoms sip the rosy dew | F |
But your Alexis knows no sweets but you | F |
Oh deign to visit our forsaken seats | D |
The mossy fountains and the green retreats | D |
Where e'er you walk cool gales shall fan the glade | C |
Trees where you sit shall crowd into a shade | C |
Where e'er you tread the blushing flow'rs shall rise | D |
And all things flourish where you turn your eyes | D |
Oh How I long with you to pass my days | D |
Invoke the muses and resound your praise | D |
Your praise the birds shall chant in ev'ry grove | G |
And winds shall waft it to the pow'rs above | H |
But wou'd you sing and rival Orpheus' strain | I |
The wond'ring forests soon shou'd dance again | J |
The moving mountains hear the pow'rful call | K |
And headlong streams hang list'ning in their fall | K |
But see the shepherds shun the noon day heat | L |
The lowing herds to murm'ring brooks retreat | L |
To closer shades the panting flocks remove | M |
Ye Gods And is there no relief for Love | H |
But soon the sun with milder rays descends | D |
To the cool ocean where his journey ends | D |
On me Love's fiercer flames for ever prey | N |
By night he scorches as he burns by day | N |
