Prologue To 'the Three Hours After Marriage' Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFGHHIJHH KKLLMMFFNOPP QQRRQQFFSS

Authors are judged by strange capricious rulesA
The great ones are thought mad the small ones foolsA
Yet sure the best are most severely fatedB
For fools are only laugh'd at wits are hatedC
Blockheads with reason men of sense abhorD
But fool 'gainst fool is barbarous civil warD
Why on all authors then should critics fallE
Since some have writ and shown no wit at allE
Condemn a play of theirs and they evade itF
Cry 'Damn not us but damn the French who made it 'G
By running goods these graceless owlers gainH
Theirs are the rules of France the plots of SpainH
But wit like wine from happier climates broughtI
Dash'd by these rogues turns English common draughtJ
They pall Moli re's and Lopez' sprightly strainH
And teach dull harlequins to grin in vainH
-
How shall our author hope a gentler fateK
Who dares most impudently not translateK
It had been civil in these ticklish timesL
To fetch his fools and knaves from foreign climesL
Spaniards and French abuse to the world's endM
But spare old England lest you hurt a friendM
If any fool is by our satire bitF
Let him hiss loud to show you all he's hitF
Poets make characters as salesmen clothesN
We take no measure of your fops and beauxO
But here all sizes and all shapes you meetP
And fit yourselves like chaps in Monmouth StreetP
-
Gallants look here this fool's cap has an airQ
Goodly and smart with ears of IssacharQ
Let no one fool engross it or confineR
A common blessing now 'tis yours now mineR
But poets in all ages had the careQ
To keep this cap for such as will to wearQ
Our author has it now for every witF
Of course resign'd it to the next that writF
And thus upon the stage 'tis fairly thrownS
Let him that takes it wear it as his ownS
