Prologue, Designed For Mr D'urfey's Last Play Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHIGGJJ KKLLMMNN

Grown old in rhyme 'twere barbarous to discardA
Your persevering unexhausted bardA
Damnation follows death in other menB
But your damn'd poet lives and writes againB
The adventurous lover is successful stillC
Who strives to please the fair against her willC
Be kind and make him in his wishes easyD
Who in your own despite has strove to please yeD
He scorn'd to borrow from the wits of yoreE
But ever writ as none e'er writ beforeE
You modern wits should each man bring his claimF
Have desperate debentures on your fameF
And little would be left you I'm afraidG
If all your debts to Greece and Rome were paidG
From this deep fund our author largely drawsH
Nor sinks his credit lower than it wasI
Though plays for honour in old time he madeG
'Tis now for better reasons to be paidG
Believe him he has known the world too longJ
And seen the death of much immortal songJ
He says poor poets lost while players wonK
As pimps grow rich while gallants are undoneK
Though Tom the poet writ with ease and pleasureL
The comic Tom abounds in other treasureL
Fame is at best an unperforming cheatM
But 'tis substantial happiness to eatM
Let ease his last request be of your givingN
Nor force him to be damn'd to get his livingN
