Macer : A Character Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDAAEEFFGG HHIIJJAKLLMM| When simple Macer now of high renown | A |
| First fought a Poet's Fortune in the Town | A |
| 'Twas all th' Ambition his high soul could feel | B |
| To wear red stockings and to dine with Steele | B |
| Some Ends of verse his Betters might afford | C |
| And gave the harmless fellow a good word | D |
| Set up with these he ventur'd on the Town | A |
| And with a borrow'd Play out did poor Crown | A |
| There he stopp'd short nor since has write a tittle | E |
| But has the wit to make the most of little | E |
| Like stunted hide bound Trees that just have got | F |
| Sufficient sap at once to bear and rot | F |
| Now he begs Verse and what he gets commends | G |
| Not of the Wits his foes but Fools his friends | G |
| - | |
| So some coarse Country Wench almost decay'd | H |
| Trudges to town and first turns Chambermaid | H |
| Awkward and supple each devoir to pay | I |
| She flatters her good Lady twice a day | I |
| Thought wond'rous honest tho' of mean degree | J |
| And strangely lik'd for her Simplicity | J |
| In a translated Suit then tries the Town | A |
| With borrow'd Pins and Patches not her own | K |
| But just endur'd the winter she began | L |
| And in four months a batter'd Harridan | L |
| Now nothing left but wither'd pale and shrunk | M |
| To bawd for others and go shares with Punk | M |
