Macer : A Character Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDAAEEFFGG HHIIJJAKLLMM

When simple Macer now of high renownA
First fought a Poet's Fortune in the TownA
'Twas all th' Ambition his high soul could feelB
To wear red stockings and to dine with SteeleB
Some Ends of verse his Betters might affordC
And gave the harmless fellow a good wordD
Set up with these he ventur'd on the TownA
And with a borrow'd Play out did poor CrownA
There he stopp'd short nor since has write a tittleE
But has the wit to make the most of littleE
Like stunted hide bound Trees that just have gotF
Sufficient sap at once to bear and rotF
Now he begs Verse and what he gets commendsG
Not of the Wits his foes but Fools his friendsG
-
So some coarse Country Wench almost decay'dH
Trudges to town and first turns ChambermaidH
Awkward and supple each devoir to payI
She flatters her good Lady twice a dayI
Thought wond'rous honest tho' of mean degreeJ
And strangely lik'd for her SimplicityJ
In a translated Suit then tries the TownA
With borrow'd Pins and Patches not her ownK
But just endur'd the winter she beganL
And in four months a batter'd HarridanL
Now nothing left but wither'd pale and shrunkM
To bawd for others and go shares with PunkM
