Yes I beheld the Athenian queenA
Descend in all her sober charmsB
'And take ' she said and smiled sereneA
'Take at this hand celestial armsB
-
'Secure the radiant weapons wieldC
This golden lance shall guard desertD
And if a vice dares keep the fieldC
This steel shall stab it to the heart '-
-
Awed on my bended knees I fellE
Received the weapons of the skyF
And dipp'd them in the sable wellE
The fount of fame or infamyG
-
'What well what weapon ' Flavia criesH
'A standish steel and golden penI
It came from Bertrand's not the skiesH
I gave it you to write againI
-
'But friend take heed whom you attackJ
You'll bring a house I mean of peersK
Red blue and green nay white and blackJ
L and all about your earsK
-
'You'd write as smooth again on glassL
And run on ivory so glibM
As not to stick at fool or assL
Nor stop at flattery or fibM
-
'Athenian queen and sober charmsB
I tell ye fool there's nothing in'tG
'Tis Venus Venus gives these armsB
In Dryden's Virgil see the printN
-
'Come if you'll be a quiet soulO
That dares tell neither truth nor liesH
I'll list you in the harmless rollO
Of those that sing of these poor eyes '-
