Dear damn'd distracting town farewellA
Thy fools no more I'll teaseB
This year in peace ye critics dwellA
Ye harlots sleep at easeB
-
Soft B and rough C s adieuC
Earl Warwick made your moanD
The lively H k and youC
May knock up whores aloneD
-
To drink and droll be Rowe allow'dE
Till the third watchman's tollF
Let Jervas gratis paint and FrowdeE
Save three pence and his soulF
-
Farewell Arbuthnot's railleryG
On every learned sotE
And Garth the best good Christian heH
Although he knows it notE
-
Lintot farewell thy bard must goI
Farewell unhappy TonsonD
Heaven gives thee for thy loss of RoweI
Lean Philips and fat JohnsonD
-
Why should I stay Both parties rageJ
My vixen mistress squallsK
The wits in envious feuds engageJ
And Homer damn him callsK
-
The love of arts lies cold and deadE
In Halifax's urnD
And not one Muse of all he fedE
Has yet the grace to mournD
-
My friends by turns my friends confoundE
Betray and are betrayedE
Poor Y r's sold for fifty poundE
And B ll is a jadeE
-
Why make I friendships with the greatE
When I no favour seekL
Or follow girls seven hours in eightE
I us'd but once a weekL
-
Still idle with a busy airG
Deep whimsies to contriveM
The gayest valetudinaireG
Most thinking rake aliveM
-
Solicitous for others' endsN
Though fond of dear reposeO
Careless or drowsy with my friendsN
And frolic with my foesO
-
Luxurious lobster nights farewellA
For sober studious daysP
And Burlington's delicious mealQ
For salads tarts and peaseB
-
Adieu to all but Gay aloneD
Whose soul sincere and freeG
Loves all mankind but flatters noneD
And so may starve with meG
