Epitaph Ix. On General Henry Withers, In Westminster Abbey, 1729 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEFGHHIJ

Here Withers rest thou bravest gentlest mindA
Thy country's friend but more of human kindA
Oh born to arms oh worth in youth approvedB
Oh soft humanity in age belovedC
For thee the hardy veteran drops a tearD
And the gay courtier feels the sigh sincereE
Withers adieu yet not with thee removeF
Thy martial spirit or thy social loveG
Amidst corruption luxury and rageH
Still leave some ancient virtues to our ageH
Nor let us say those English glories goneI
The last true Briton lies beneath this stoneJ
