Chorus Of Athenians Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCCDEFF AGGHHAAII AJJIIKKLL AMMNNOOPP

Strophe IA
Ye shades where sacred truth is soughtB
Groves where immortal Sages taughtB
Where heav'nly visions of Plato fir'dC
And Epicurus lay inspir'dC
In vain your guiltless laurels stoodD
Unspotted long with human bloodE
War horrid war your thoughtful walks invadesF
And steel now glitters in the Muses' shadesF
-
Antistrophe IA
Oh heav'n born sisters source of artG
Who charm the sense or mend the heartG
Who lead fair Virtue's train alongH
Moral Truth and mystic SongH
To what new clime what distant skyA
Forsaken friendless shall ye flyA
Say will you bless the bleak Atlantic shoreI
Or bid the furious Gaul be rude no moreI
-
Strophe IIA
When Athens sinks by fates unjustJ
When wild Barbarians spurn her dustJ
Perhaps ev'n Britain's utmost shoreI
Shall cease to blush with strager's goreI
See Arts her savage sons controlK
And Athens rising near the poleK
'Till some new Tyrant lifts his purple handL
And civil madness tears them from this landL
-
Antistrophe IIA
Ye Gods what justice rules the ballM
Freedom and Arts together fallM
Fools grant whate'er Ambition cravesN
And men once ignorant are slavesN
Oh curs'd effects of civil hateO
In ev'ry age in ev'ry stateO
Still when the lust of tyrant power succeedsP
Some Athens perishes some Tully bleedsP
