The Wolves Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBCCD EFGFHHA CIJICCA KLMLCCN AOPOQQE RSASEEA

When the church village slumbersA
And the last songs are sungB
When the grey mist arisingC
Is o'er the marshes hungB
'Tis then the woods forsakingC
Their way cross country takingC
Nine howling wolves come hungering for foodD
-
Behind the first the grey oneE
Trot seven more of blackF
Close on their hoary leaderG
As rearguard of the packF
The red wolf limps all bloodyH
His paws with gore still ruddyH
As after his companions grim he pantsA
-
When through the village lurkingC
Nought gives them check or frightI
No watch dog dares to bellowJ
The peasant ghastly whiteI
His breath can scarce be takingC
His limbs withhold from shakingC
While prayers of terror freeze upon his lipsA
-
About the church they circleK
And softly slink awayL
To prowl about the priest's farmM
Then of a sudden theyL
Are round the drink shop turningC
Fain some bad word be learningC
From peasants drinking noisily withinN
-
With fully thirteen bulletsA
Thy weapon must be armedO
And with a wad of goat's hairP
Then thou wilt fight unharmedO
Fire calmly and before allQ
Will the leader the grey fallQ
The rest will surely follow one by oneE
-
When the cock wakes the villageR
From out its morning dreamS
Thou wilt behold the corpsesA
Nine she wolves by the streamS
On the right lies the grey oneE
To left in frost the lame oneE
All bloody God pardon us sinnersA
