Ukraine Rain (the Holodomore 1932-33) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCB DEFFE GHIIJ KLMML NOPQO

The Ukraine rain fell long and hardA
From clouds above on highB
But what were shedC
Were tears of redC
To spill on fields awryB
-
As storms of rage passed o'er the landD
A horseman through it rodeE
A black horse dayF
Of wild dismayF
As floods of red rain flowedE
-
Neath the yellow and the blueG
The Ukraine rain poured onH
It steeped the groundI
For miles aroundI
And harvest yield was goneJ
-
As people cried and people diedK
The pain of rain aflameL
With nought to eatM
The yellow wheatM
Was plundered beyond shameL
-
And all about the crippled soulsN
Wept through blood red eyesO
As once againP
The Ukraine rainQ
Screamed down from blood red skiesO

Alan S Jeeves

Poet's note: Inspired by the book 'Red Famine' by Anne Applebaum. Her 2017 work was awarded the Lionel Gelber Prize and also the Duff Cooper Prize. The book itself is well worth reading if only to preserve the memory of the 4.5 million (Applebaum's estimate) souls who starved to death during the 'Holodomore'. Therefore I writ this poem for them. As Duff Cooper himself famously said "Old men forget"
