A GLEAM a gleam from Ida's heightA
By the Fire god sent it cameB
From watch to watch it leapt that lightA
As a rider rode the flameB
It shot through the startled skyC
And the torch of that blazing gloryD
Old Lemnos caught on highC
On its holy promontoryD
And sent it on the jocund signE
To Athos Mount of Jove divineE
Wildly the while it rose from the isleF
So that the might of the journeying LightA
Skimmed over the back of the gleaming brineE
Farther and faster speeds it onG
Till the watch that keeps Macistus steepH
See it burst like a blazing SunI
Doth Macistus sleepH
On his tower clad steepH
No rapid and red doth the wild fire sweepH
It flashes afar on the wayward streamJ
Of the wild Euripus the rushing beamJ
It rouses the light on Messapion's heightA
And they feed its breath with the withered heathK
But it may not stayL
And away awayL
It bounds in its freshening mightA
-
Silent and soonM
Like a broadened moonM
It passes in sheen Asopus greenN
And bursts on Cithaeron grayL
The warder wakes to the Signal raysO
And it swoops from the hill with a broader blazeO
On on the fiery Glory rodeP
Thy lonely lake Gorgopis glowedP
To Megara's Mount it cameB
They feed it againQ
And it streams amainQ
A giant beard of FlameB
The headland cliffs that darkly downQ
O'er the Saronic waters frownQ
Are passed with the Swift One's lurid strideR
And the huge rock glares on the glaring tideR
With mightier march and fiercer powerD
It gained Arachne's neighboring towerD
Thence on our Argive roof its rest it wonQ
Of Ida's fire the long descended SonQ
Bright Harbinger of glory and of joyS
So first and last with equal honor crownedT
In solemn feasts the race torch circles roundT
And these my heralds this my SIGN OF PEACEU
Lo while we breathe the victor lords of GreeceU
Stalk in stern tumult through the halls of TroyS
