LOUD roared the tempestA
Fast fell the sleetB
A little Child AngelC
Passed down the streetB
With trailing pinionsD
And weary feetB
-
The moon was hiddenE
No stars were brightF
So she could not shelterG
In heaven that nightF
For the Angels laddersD
Are rays of lightF
-
She beat her wingsD
At each windowpaneH
And pleaded for shelterG
But all in vainH
Listen they saidI
To the pelting rainH
-
She sobb d as the laughterG
And mirth grew higherG
Give me rest and shelterG
Beside your fireG
And I will give youJ
Your heart s desireG
-
The dreamer sat watchingK
His embers gleamL
While his heart was floatingK
Down hope s bright streamL
So he wove her wailingK
Into his dreamL
-
The worker toil d onM
For his time was briefN
The mourner was nursingK
Her own pale griefN
They heard not the promiseD
That brought reliefN
-
But fiercer the tempestA
Rose than beforeO
When the Angel paus dP
At a humble doorO
And ask d for shelterG
And help once moreO
-
A weary womanE
Pale worn and thinQ
With the brand upon herG
Of want and sinQ
Heard the Child AngelC
And took her inQ
-
Took her in gentlyP
And did her bestR
To dry her pinionsD
And made her restR
With tender pityP
Upon her breastR
-
When the eastern morningK
Grew bright and redI
Up the first sunbeamL
The Angel fledI
Having kiss d the womanE
And left her deadI
