Fidelis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE CGHGICCC AEHECJIJ KLKLMENO GPIPCOKO

You have taken back the promiseA
That you spoke so long agoB
Taken back the heart you gave meC
I must even let it goB
Where Love once has breathed Pride diethD
So I struggled but in vainE
First to keep the links togetherF
Then to piece the broken chainE
-
But it might not be so freelyC
All your friendship I restoreG
And the heart that I had takenH
As my own forevermoreG
No shade of reproach shall touch youI
Dread no more a claim from meC
But I will not have you fancyC
That I count myself as freeC
-
I am bound by the old promiseA
What can break that golden chainE
Not even the words that you have spokenH
Or the sharpness of my painE
Do you think because you fail meC
And draw back your hand todayJ
That from out the heart I gave youI
My strong love can fade awayJ
-
It will live No eyes may see itK
In my soul it will lie deepL
Hidden from all but I shall feel itK
Often stirring in its sleepL
So remember that the friendshipM
Which you now think poor and vainE
Will endure in hope and patienceN
Till you ask for it againO
-
Perhaps in some long twilight hourG
Like those we have known of oldP
When past shadows gather round youI
And your present friends grow coldP
You may stretch your hands out towards meC
Ahl You will I know not whenO
I shall nurse my love and keep itK
Faithfully for you till thenO
