By Wood and WoldA
A PreambleB
-
Beneath the greenwood bough W ScottC
-
-
Lightly the breath of the spring wind blowsD
Though laden with faint perfumeE
'Tis the fragrance rare that the bushman knowsD
The scent of the wattle bloomE
Two thirds of our journey at least are doneF
Old horse let us take a spellG
In the shade from the glare of the noonday sunF
Thus far we have travell'd wellG
Your bridle I'll slip your saddle ungirthH
And lay them beside this logI
For you'll roll in that track of reddish earthH
And shake like a water dogI
-
Upon yonder rise there's a clump of treesJ
Their shadows look cool and broadK
You can crop the grass as fast as you pleaseJ
While I stretch my limbs on the swardL
'Tis pleasant I ween with a leafy screenM
O'er the weary head to lieN
On the mossy carpet of emerald greenM
'Neath the vault of the azure skyN
Thus all alone by the wood and woldA
I yield myself once againO
To the memories old that like tales fresh toldA
Come flitting across the brainP
