Of chases and courses dogs dream so do horsesA
Last night I was dozing and dreamingB
The crowd and the bustle were there and the rustleC
Of the silk in the autumn sky gleamingB
-
The stand throng'd with faces the broadcloth and lacesA
The booths and the tents and the carsD
The bookmakers' jargon for odds making bargainE
The nasty stale smell of cigarsD
-
We formed into line 'neath the merry sunshineF
Near the logs at the end of the railingB
'Are you ready boys Go ' cried the starter and lowG
Sank the flag and away we went sailingB
-
In the van of the battle we heard the stones rattleC
Some slogging was done but no slaughterH
A shout from the stand and the whole of our bandI
Skimm'd merrily over the waterH
-
Two fences we clear'd and the roadway we near'dJ
When three of our troop came to troublenF
Like a bird on the wing or a stone from a slingB
Flew Cadger first over the doubleC
-
And Western was there head and tail in the airK
And Pondon was there too what noodleC
Could so name a horse I should feel some remorseL
If I gave such a name to a poodleC
-
In and out of the lane to the racecourse againF
Craig's pony was first I was thirdM
And Ingleside lit in my tracks with the bitN
In his teeth and came up 'like a bird '-
-
In the van of the battle we heard the rails rattleC
Says he 'Though I don't care for shunningB
My share of the raps I shall look out for gapsO
When the light weight's away with the running '-
-
At the fence just ahead the outsider still ledP
The chestnut play'd follow my leaderH
Oh the devil a gap he went into it slapQ
And he and his jock took a headerH
-
Says Ingleside 'Mate should the pony go straightR
You've no time to stop or turn restive '-
Says I 'Who means to stop I shall go till I drop '-
Says he 'Go it old cuss gay and festive '-
-
The fence stiff and tall just beyond the log wallS
We cross'd and the walls and the waterH
I took off too near a small made fence to clearT
And just touch'd the grass with my snorterH
-
At the next post and rail up went Western's bang tailU
And down by the very same tokenF
To earth went his nose for the panel he choseV
Stood firm and refused to be brokenF
-
I dreamt someone said that the bay would have madeW
The race safe if he'd stood a while longerH
If he had but like if there the panel stands stiffX
He stood but the panel stood strongerH
-
In and out of the road with a clear lead still show'dY
The violet fluted with amberH
Says Johnson 'Old man catch him now if you canF
'Tis the second time round you'll remember '-
-
At the road once again pulling hard on the reinF
Craig's pony popp'd in and popp'd outZ
I followed like smoke and the pace was no jokeA2
For his friends were beginning to shoutZ
-
And Ingleside came to my side strong and gameB2
And once he appear'd to outstrip meC2
But I felt the steel gore and I shot to the foreD2
Only Cadger seem'd likely to whip meC2
-
In the van of the battle I heard the logs rattleC
His stroke never seem'd to diminishE2
And thrice I drew near him and thrice he drew clearT
For the weight served him well at the finishE2
-
Ha Cadger goes down see he stands on his crownF
Those rails take a power of cloutingA2
A long sliding blunder he's up well I wonderH
If now it's all over but shoutingA2
-
All loosely he's striding the amateur's ridingA2
All loosely some reverie locked inF
Of a 'vision in smoke ' or a 'wayfaring bloke '-
His poetical rubbish concoctingA2
-
Now comes from afar the faint cry 'Here they are '-
'The violet winning with ease '-
'Fred goes up like a shot ' 'Does he catch him or not '-
Level money I'll take the ceriseF2
-
To his haunches I spring and my muzzle I bringA2
To his flank to his girth to his shoulderH
Through the shouting and yelling I hear my name swellingA2
The hearts of my backers grow bolderH
-
Neck and neck head and head staring eye nostrils spreadP
Girth and stifle laid close to the groundG2
Stride for stride stroke for stroke through one hurdle we've brokeA2
On the splinters we've lit with one boundG2
-
And 'Banker for choice' is the cry and one voiceH2
Screams 'Six to four once upon Banker '-
'Banker wins ' 'Banker's beat ' 'Cadger wins ' 'A dead heat'G2
'Ah there goes Fred's whalebone a flanker '-
-
Springs the whip with a crack nine stone ten on his backA2
Fit and light he can race like the devilC
I draw past him 'tis vain he draws past me againF
Springs the whip and again we are levelC
-
Steel and cord do their worst now my head struggles firstG2
That tug my last spurt has expendedG2
Nose to nose lip to lip from the sound of the whipI2
He strains to the utmost extendedG2
-
How they swim through the air as we roll to the chairK
Stand faces and railings flit pastG2
Now I springA2
from my lair with a snort and a stareK
Rous'd by Fred with my supper at lastG2
