Through the wild night the silence and the darkA
Through league on league of the uncharted skyB
Lonelier than dove of fable from its arkA
The fieldfares flyB
-
Mate with his tiny mate and younglings frailC
That only knew the crevice of their treeD
Until in faith stupendous they set sailC
Across the seaD
-
The black North Sea that takes such savage tollE
Of ships and men and yet could not appalE
These little mariners who seek their goalE
Beyond it allE
-
Turning those soft indomitable breastsF
To meet the unchained Titans of the deepG
Calm as if cradled in Norwegian nestsF
Their course they keepG
-
No more than thistledown or flake of snowH
To those great gods at play they win the gameI
Never sped archer's arrow from his bowJ
With surer aimI
-
Still tossed and scattered their unwinking eyesK
Point to that pole unseen where wanderings ceaseL
Still on they press and warble to the skiesK
With hearts at peaceL
-
Scenting the English morning in the airM
Through the salt night ere any morning wakesN
The perfumed fields the dun woods sere and bareM
The brambly brakesN
-
The well loved orchard with its hawthorn hedgeO
Where luscious berries red and brown are foundP
The misty miles of water mead and sedgeO
Where gnats aboundP
-
-
But what is this 'twixt sea and surf bound shoreQ
What form stands there amid the shadows grayR
With flaming blade that smites them as they soarQ
And bars their wayR
-
Hushed are the twittering throats each silken headS
Turns to the voiceless siren turns and staresT
By some strange lure of mystery and dreadS
Caught unawaresT
-
It draws them on as the magnetic sunU
Draws vagrant meteors to its burning breastV
The day is near the harbour all but wonU
That English nestV
-
But here they meet inexorable FateW
Here lies a dreadful reef of fire and glassX
Here stands a glittering sentry at the gateW
They cannot passX
-
Confused dismayed they flutter in the galeE
Those little pinions that have lost their trackY
The gallant hearts that sped them reel and failE
Like ships abackY
-
Sucked in a magic current like a leafZ
Torn from autumnal tree they drift abroadA2
But ever nearer to the siren reefZ
The ruthless swordB2
-
On on transfixed and swooning without checkC2
To the lee shore of that bedazzling wallE
Until they strike and break in utter wreckC2
And founder allE
-
Brave little wings that sailed the storm so wellE
Trimmed to the set of every wayward blastD2
Brave little hearts that never storm could quellE
Beaten at lastD2
-
The great sea swallows them and they are goneE2
For ever gone like bubbles of the foamF2
And the bright star that lured them shining onG2
Still points to HomeF2
