The Soldier's Grave Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGDGDDHD HIJIKDLD

Twas long ago in the summer timeA
On a day as sad as thisB
That I laid my babe in its father's armsC
And he gave it his farewell kissB
When the army sail'd from the English shoresD
In a mist of sun and rainE
To the vine clad hills and citadelsD
And the olive groves of SpainE
-
I set my face to the balmy southF
And listen'd intent and dumbG
As though a cry from the battle groundsD
On the fragrant wind might comeG
I yearn'd for a gleam of the red camp firesD
Which burn'd through the watchful nightsD
For the shine of the bayonets that clash'd one dayH
On the dread Albuera heightsD
-
Ah me And my face cannot turn awayH
Though the ashes are on my browI
Though the news of the battle came once for allJ
And there's nothing to watch for nowI
Though 'tis further away than that far south landK
I must look for my dear man's faceD
Though I know he will never come home againL
To the chair in the old house placeD
