And must I wear a silken lifeA
Hemmed in by city wallsB
And must I give my garden upC
For theatres and ballsB
-
Nay though the cage be made of goldD
'Tis better to be freeE
The green of the green meadows loveF
Is quite enough for meE
-
I'd rather ramble through the lanesG
Than drive about in townH
I'd rather muse or dream than danceI
When the stars are shining downH
-
I do not care for diamonds dearJ
But I care a deal for flowersK
And thousands are just creeping outL
For the sunshine and the showersK
-
I like to hear the Household bandM
But I love the bird songs bestN
And hark how they are twittering nowO
Round each half hidden nestN
-
The wind is whispering in the leavesP
And the downy bees beginQ
To hum in the blossoming sycamoresP
And the brook is chiming inQ
-
There is such melody in the woodsP
Such music in the airR
The streets are full of life and soundS
And yet 'tis silent thereR
-
I like to see the pictures ayT
But I am hard to pleaseP
I never saw a picture yetU
As great and grand as theseP
Such tones of colour as transformV
The tender green and brownH
When the pink dawn is flushing upC
Or the red sun sinking downH
-
Such painting as the chestnut budW
Shows in its opening heartX
Such lights as shine 'twixt earth and skyY
When rain clouds break apartX
-
Such soft warm subtle tints as lieY
In every mossy patchZ
On the blue brown trunks now filled with lifeA
And the humble roof of thatchZ
-
In the purple hollows of the hillsP
In the lichen on the wallA2
In the orchard and the feathery woodsP
And the sun lit waterfallA2
-
I like my humble country waysP
My simple early mealsP
I like to potter about the yardB2
With my chickens at my heelsP
-
I'd rather climb this brambly steepC2
Where freshest sea winds blowD2
With my old straw hat hanging down my backE2
Than canter along the RowD2
-
To me it's vulgar dear I knowD2
No f te half so gayT
As a cricket match on the village greenF2
Or a picnic in the hayT
-
Ah yes I'm happier as I amG2
I'm ignorant you seeP
And the life of fashion that you loveF
Would never do for meP
