The Old Maid's Story Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEF GHGICJCJKLKL MNMNOPOPQRQR

Ay many and many a year's gone byA
Since the dawn of that day in springB
When we met in the pine woods Harry and IA
And he gave me this golden ringB
I had lovers in plenty of high degreeC
Who wooed in my father's hallD
But none were so noble and brave as heC
Though he was the scorn'd of allD
On the soft green grass where the shadows layE
All fleck'd with the sun and dewF
With a ring and a kiss did we seal that dayE
Our vow to be leal and trueF
-
'Twas a life long vow but they did not knowG
And they thought not of love or painH
We met just once in the sleet and snowG
We were never to meet againI
He was sent away o'er the blank wide seaC
And I with my hopes and fearsJ
Had never a message to comfort meC
For over a score of yearsJ
They laugh'd at my heart they paraded my handK
But I answer'd them cold and grimL
If Harry ne'er comes to his native landK
They shall only belong to himL
-
At last came a tale from the battle fieldM
And they were not scornful nowN
The sentence of exile might be repealedM
They would honour our plighted vowN
They told how my Harry like olden knightsO
Had fought for his land and QueenP
Fought hard and well on the Alma heightsO
Where the deadliest strife was seenP
They told how he fell in the fire and smokeQ
And they gave me his things to keepR
They wonder'd why I never cried or spokeQ
But it was too late to weepR
