The Coo Of The Cushat Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEEE FGHI JKEK LMEM NOPO EQRQ OSNSIQEQ ITIT

Over the smooth lawns broider'd with violetsA
Over the hedges of snow white thornB
Over the billowy pink apple blossomsC
The musical coo of the cushat is borneB
-
In the still depths of the dim old plantationsD
Where the sweet whispering night wind stirsE
The delicate scent from the dew sprinkled flowersE
It sings by its nest in the tall green firsE
-
So peaceful so pure so divinely contentedF
The world out of sight and its true love nighG
Their little grey wings softly folded togetherH
What dreams I have set to that melodyI
-
I listen at dawn and I listen at evenJ
I hear the notes bubbling all day longK
Through the woodpecker's laugh and the chirp of the titmouseE
Little dove yours is the sweetest songK
-
'Tis not a sad song though it sets me a cryingL
But gladness too deep to be spoken aloudM
Nor forlorn though 'tis sung in the loneliest placesE
But only too sacred to sing to a crowdM
-
I envy you though you're so small and so humbleN
I wish I were like you you shy little doveO
So far from the world and so free from its passionP
Yet sure of your white eggs and sure of your loveO
-
I wish I were pure from low earthly ambitionsE
As quiet and calm and contented as youQ
I wish my heart held such a well spring of musicR
That I were as gentle and trustful and trueQ
-
Little dove you were worthy to carry the oliveO
Over the waters to Noah's hostS
To die for the mother of Christ in the TempleN
To be chosen for shrine of the Holy GhostS
And now you have only to live and be happyI
To rear up your young ones and teach them to cooQ
O sing on and teach me the heavenly lessonsE
To be faithful and worthy of God's work tooQ
-
Teach me so humbly to take what He gives meI
The manifold duties the great and the smallT
Teach me so simply to do what He bids meI
Loving and trustful and thankful for allT
