The spirit of man is the candle of the LordA
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children ofB
GodC
-
Our spirit ay our own the tree whose fruitsD
Have never fail'd the sign upon the doorE
'Twixt us and God's intelligent dumb brutesD
That parts us evermoreE
-
Our spirit last best gift still unbereftC
Of treasures stored in Eden's happy landC
One fragment of the human as it leftC
The Divine Maker's handC
-
That seal of our high birth He did allowF
Toea unharm'd the sin and woe and strifeG
That remnant of our godhead wanting nowF
Only the breath of lifeG
-
Only the breath of life whereby the LordC
Made us to be His equals fit to fillH
His throne our free wills brought into accordC
With His own sovereign willH
-
Our spirit not the feeble soul which cameI
With our dishonour'd state and its new needsD
And not the feebler heart of sin and shameI
That daily breaks and bleedsD
-
Our spirit our unshatter'd lamp still oursD
Fill'd with the heavenly essence as of yoreE
To bear a light to light the midnight hoursD
And light the wreck to shoreE
-
Ay 'tis the same the same It hath not sharedC
The mutilation and the curse and blightC
When the destruction fell the lamp was sparedC
Only deprived of LightC
-
O God and hath it ever ceased to gropeJ
For light and yearn and cry for light to comeK
In blackest gloom ere revelation spokeL
While yet the Christ was dumbK
-
Thou knowest it search'd for every wandering rayM
And never wearied of the weary questC
And fed and fenced and treasured day by dayM
A glimmer in its breastC
-
O holy Dove O Grace O Love come downN
Our spirit with Thy perfect light inspireO
Circle each candle with its flaming crownN
Its cloven tongue of fireP
