A summer wind blows through the open porchA
And 'neath the rustling eavesB
A summer light of moonrise calm and paleC
Shines through a vale of leavesB
-
The soft gusts bring a scent of summer flowersD
Fresh with the falling dewE
And round the doorway glimmering white as snowF
The tender petals strewE
-
Clear through the silence from a reedy poolG
The curlew's whistle thrillsH
A lonely mopoke sorrowfully criesI
From the far folding hillsH
-
O lovely night and yet so sad and strangeJ
My fingers touch the keyK
And down the empty church my Christmas songL
Goes ringing glad and freeK
-
Each sweet note knocks at dreaming memory's doorM
And memory wakes in painN
The spectral faces she had turn'd awayO
Come crowding in againP
-
The air seems full of music all aroundQ
I know not what I hearR
The multitudinous echoes of the pastS
Or these few voices nearT
-
Ah me the dim aisle vaguely widens outU
I see me stand thereinV
A glory of grey sculpture takes the lightW
A winter morn brings inV
-
No more I smell the fragrant jessamine flowersD
That flake a moonlit floorM
The rustling night breeze and the open porchA
I hear and see no moreM
Great solemn windows down a long long naveX
Their shadow'd rainbows flingY
Dark Purbeck shafts with hoary capitalsZ
In carven archways springY
-
And overhead the throbbing organ wavesA2
Roll in one mighty seaK
-
Bearing the song the herald angels sangB2
Of Christ's nativityK
-
Dear hands touch mine beneath the open bookC2
Sweet eyes look in my faceD2
They smile they melt in darkness I am snatch'dE2
From my familiar placeD2
-
The summer night wind blows upon my tearsF2
Its flowery scent is painN
O cold white day O noble minster whenP
May I come back againP
-
To hear the angels' anthem shake the airG2
Where never discord jarsH2
The Christmas carols in the windy streetI2
Under the frosty starsH2
-
The dream like falling from the still grey skiesI
With falling flakes of snowF
Of mellow chimes from old cathedral bellsJ2
Solemn and sweet and slowF
-
To hear loved footsteps beating time with mineK2
Along the churchyard pathL2
To see that ring of faces once againP
Drawn round the blazing hearthM2
-
When may I come O Lord when may I goF
Nay I must wait Thy willN2
Give patience Lord and in Thine own best wayO
My hopes and prayers fulfilN2
