A
-
When earth's winter barenessB
Feels the April rainC
All her summer fairnessB
Comes to life againD
So my spirit quickens to that magic strainC
-
-
-
Fancy warmed and brightenedE
Spreads her folded wingsB
Passion stirred enlightenedE
From its slumber springsB
When that bow is laid upon those trembling stringsB
-
-
-
Visions past all tellingF
Sweet and strange I seeB
Mystic voices swellingF
Melting cry to meB
From celestial realms of hope and memoryB
-
-
-
Tender thoughts caress meB
Like a summer's dayG
Sterner moods possess meB
As the rough winds playG
With an autumn leaf untimely cast awayG
-
-
-
Fierce desires come creepingF
From their secret lairH
Wild regrets upleapingF
At my heartstrings tearH
Wildest aspirations more than I can bearH
-
-
-
Like a leaf I quiverI
With responsive thrillsB
Ache and burn and shiverI
As the Master willsB
Whose mysterious message all my being fillsB
-
-
-
Dreams of grace and gloryB
Always out of reachJ
Truths untold in storyB
That no book can teachJ
Past all human language find their native speechJ
-
-
-
O what wailing sadnessB
That no tongue may tellK
What enraptured gladnessB
In those wild notes swellK
Bliss and anguish both divine ineffableL
-
-
-
Joys and woes unspokenM
Whereof earth is rifeN
Dear hopes blest and brokenM
Futile pain and strifeN
Birth and death and love the tragedy of lifeN
-
-
-
And my soul attendingF
Through my listening earsB
In those strains heartrendingF
Its own history hearsB
All too sweet for words too terrible for tearsB
