Holy Communion Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Father for Jesus' sakeA
Low at the footstool of Thy throne I prayB
That Thou into Thine arms of love to dayB
My trembling soul wilt takeA
-
Thine eyes can see I knowC
How many a dark and fearful spot of sinD
Stains the white garment Thou didst clothe it inD
Once undefiled as snowC
-
I dare not come aloneE
Into Thy presence for that sin to pleadF
But there is One who waits to intercedeF
Whose merits will atoneE
-
Into the holy placeG
He takes the incense of our common prayerH
Which mingling with His own ascendeth thereH
Up to Thy throne of graceG
-
All too unclean it isI
Too cold and weak above this earth to riseJ
Save He in love eternal sanctifiesJ
And hallows it with HisJ
-
Therefore accept from meK
Through His hands now my weak and wavering willL
And deign my heart's deep longing to fulfilL
As it seems best to TheeK
-
Pour down Thy healing lightM
Into the dark depths of my soul this dayB
Dissolve the mists and shadows oh I prayB
Let it no more be nightM
-
Spirit of love revealL
All hidden sins against Thy blessed nameN
That I may weep for them in utter shameN
As in Thy church I kneelL
And now oh cleanse them outO
Make fair again Thine olden dwelling placeJ
And let the fruitful streams of love and graceJ
Compass it round aboutO
-
Lord with repentance giveP
Faith deep and strong that naught may undermineQ
Of all that's evil in this world of ThineQ
Faith that shall breathe and liveR
-
Pour from the hallow'd cupS
Our dear Lord's stainless life into mine ownE
Put it to my soul's lips so thirsty grownE
And let them drink it upS
