A
-
Love thou hast wandered far and wideB
But here thy wanderings ceaseC
Thy long sought mate is by thy sideB
And thou canst sleep in peaceC
-
-
-
Night moans outside our window paneD
And weeps from dripping eavesE
The air is thick with falling rainD
Upon dead autumn leavesE
-
-
-
The winds of winter rave and chafeF
Around thy tranquil nestG
But I am here and thou art safeF
Thy very soul may restG
-
-
-
The wild surf thunder swells and fallsH
Upon the seething beachI
Thy world within thy chamber wallsH
Nor winds nor waves can reachI
-
-
-
Sleep fired eyes Sleep well dear heartJ
That ached so long for meK
No sudden hand shall tear apartJ
These arms that shelter theeK
-
-
-
Sleep well though late found joys be briefL
And bought with tears and painD
Shut out the memory of thy griefL
Thou didst not grieve in vainD
-
-
-
Think of our treasure kept in storeM
And not the price it costN
Those precious years that come no moreM
Which thou and I have lostO
-
-
-
O wasted years that lie behindP
Hush what is past is pastQ
Enough that we have lived to findP
What life is worth at lastQ
-
-
-
Though Fate has robbed us of so muchR
We know not what we missS
All ills are recompensed in suchR
A priceless good as thisS
-
-
-
Sleep dear The hours are passing onT
The midnight bells have tolledU
Think not how much of life is goneV
But how much more we holdU
-
-
-
Yes more as wise men reckon lifeW
Though no wise man can tellX
How soon for husband and for wifeW
The stroke of doom will knellX
-
-
-
No echo of that solemn chimeY
Break through thy perfect peaceC
No forecast of that awful timeY
When time for us will ceaseC
-
-
-
When happier worlds shall shine in spaceZ
For other eyes to seeK
And none have any more a placeZ
For thy true love and theeK
-
-
-
Be blind to all and deaf and dumbA2
In thy quick heart's despiteB2
Content thee though the end must comeA2
It will not come to nightB2
-
-
-
This night let never thought of illC2
Disturb thy slumber deepD2
To morrow I shall have thee stillC2
So thou canst safely sleepD2
-
-
-
Reprieved from that appalling fearE2
As from thy long regretF2
Be our last parting far or nearE2
We have not reached it yetF2
-
-
-
Thy head lies pillowed on my breastG
My cheek upon thy browG2
Dear love good night Thou art at restG
From Past and Future nowG2
