Evensong Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD AEAE FGFG HIHI JAJA KBKB FLFLAFAF

The sun has set grey shadows darken slowlyA
The rose red cloud hills that were bathed in lightB
O Lord to Thee with spirit meek and lowlyA
I kneel in prayer to nightB
-
I thank Thee for my daily bread the sorrowC
And the gladness Thou hast given me this dayD
The strange rich gifts which through a long to morrowC
Deep in my soul will stayD
-
I thank Thee for the grace that aye restrain dA
My passionate will when it was bent for wrongE
That fed the soul lamp when the light had wan dA
And made the weak hands strongE
-
I thank Thee that the gentle voice of pleadingF
Made itself heard amid the whirl and strifeG
E'en when I walk'd my wilful way unheedingF
Telling of light and lifeG
-
That in the sad hour of my soul's afflictionH
When I look'd backward as from parch d landsI
The gracious rain of heavenly benedictionH
Fell still from outstretch'd handsI
-
Ay ay no earnest hope no true endeavourJ
Has been unanswer'd or unbless'd by TheeA
Thou Lord who carest for Thine own for everJ
Hast cared indeed for meA
-
I think of all the blessing and the sweetnessK
That made the burden of this day so lightB
How my home ties are still in their completenessK
Wound round my heart to nightB
-
How Thou hast had my treasures in Thy keepingF
And yet hast spared them to be mine still mineL
How o'er the beds where my loved ones are sleepingF
Thy folded wings will shineL
And O my God I cannot thank Thee dulyA
No word or deed which Jesus' love will takeF
Can span the measure of one blessing trulyA
Forgive for Jesus' SakeF
