Empty Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB BDED BFGF BBHB GBIB GBJB BKLK MDNOBPQP BRSR GBMB NDBOCan this be my poem this poor fragment | A |
Of bald thought in meanest language dressed | B |
Can this string of rhymes be my sweet poem | C |
All its poetry wholly unexpressed | B |
- | |
Does it tell me of the dreams that wandered | B |
In the silent night time through my brain | D |
Of the woven web of wondrous fancies | E |
Half of keenest joy and half of pain | D |
- | |
Does it tell me of the awful beauty | B |
That came down to hide this sordid earth | F |
Does it tell me of the inward crying | G |
Of the glory whence it had its birth | F |
- | |
Only as the lamp all dull and rusted | B |
Tells me of the flame that is put out | B |
Of the shiny hair and happy faces | H |
Lighted when its radiance streamed about | B |
- | |
Only as this piece of glass now lying | G |
In the shade beside me as I sit | B |
Tells me of the soft hues of the rainbow | I |
That the morning sunshine gave to it | B |
- | |
Only as this little flask now smelling | G |
Of the dust and mould with which 'tis lined | B |
Tells me of the lovely subtle fragrance | J |
Of the perfume that it once enshrined | B |
- | |
Only as a picture blurred and faded | B |
Tells me of the bloom of colour there | K |
When the painter's soul was with his canvas | L |
And his paint was bright and fresh and fair | K |
- | |
Only as the wires and keys notes broken | M |
Odd and scattered tell me of a strain | D |
That once filled my very soul with rapture | N |
But can never be spelled out again | O |
Only as a bare brown flower stalk tells me | B |
Of the delicate blossom that it wore | P |
Of the humming bees in silken petals | Q |
And the downy butterflies it bore | P |
- | |
Only as a crazy boat sun blistered | B |
Drawn up high and dry upon the sands | R |
Tells me of the blue and buoyant billows | S |
Bearing breezy sails to foreign lands | R |
- | |
Only as a little dead lark lying | G |
With bedraggled wings and withered throat | B |
Tells me of the songs it heard in heaven | M |
Trying to teach me here and there a note | B |
- | |
Oh no oh no this is not my treasure | N |
This is but the shell where it has lain | D |
It is gone the life and light and glory | B |
And 'twill never come to me again | O |
