Awake Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MNONPQRQ STUTVWXW

Calm as that moonbeam on the wallA
Sleep broods on baby's eyesB
Arms hush'd and still but pulsing quickC
Enfold him as he liesB
My brain is full of thronging thoughtsD
Strange passions thrill my breastE
My heart aches with a load of loveF
That will not let me restE
-
The dim years stand about my bedG
They neither smile nor weepH
Like softest kisses on my faceI
The little fingers creepH
I hear slow footfalls in the nightJ
Of fates upon his trackK
O love I cannot let you goL
I cannot keep you backK
-
Lord let him shelter in my armsM
Or take us both to ThineN
Or if a troublous life must comeO
Make all the trouble mineN
Or let thy sharp swords pierce my heartP
To blunt them for the childQ
What care I Lord for stain and shameR
So he keep undefiledQ
-
Nay Lord I know not what I askS
I know not how to prayT
Hear Thou the crying mother soulU
And not the words I sayT
Do Thou what seemeth good to TheeV
So he be spared from sinW
And oh if love can aught availX
Let mine be counted inW
