Autumn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD AEAE FGFG CHCH DIDI AJAJ FKLK AMAMNONOSo still so still Only the endless sighing | A |
Of sad olian harp notes overhead | B |
Only the soft mass music for the dying | A |
Only the requiem for the newly dead | B |
- | |
So strangely dim the grey mist on the heather | C |
The chill cloud twilight in the wind stripped bowers | D |
Where gold and scarlet sunlights lay together | C |
On harvest fruit and summer wealth of flowers | D |
- | |
So empty now only the dead leaves sifting | A |
The dead brown berries underneath the trees | E |
Only my fair dead treasures idly drifting | A |
About my footsteps in the autumn breeze | E |
- | |
All over now No flowers that must be tended | F |
Are left to grow upon the open plain | G |
No fruits to ripen for the harvest's ended | F |
There's no more need for either sun or rain | G |
- | |
The infinite hope the boundless strong endeavour | C |
The love and joy I never thought to sum | H |
The precious things that were to last for ever | C |
All gather'd now and nothing more to come | H |
- | |
Only the shroud of snow the white star tapers | D |
The passionate storm winds wailing in the air | I |
Only the icy rain and tearful vapours | D |
Only the winter darkness of despair | I |
- | |
- | |
So still so sweet with tender breezes blowing | A |
Amongst the hills and o'er the Lowland sod | J |
And golden drifts of dead leaves softly strowing | A |
The seed graves hollow'd by the hands of God | J |
- | |
So grey and calm the crimson glory faded | F |
From this low sky pale blue and purple barred | K |
This placid sea with steel and silver shaded | L |
This fair earth now with autumn furrows scarred | K |
- | |
In the decay such chasten'd beauty blending | A |
Beauty late born of peace and hope and rest | M |
As in a saintly life when near the ending | A |
When all its strife and labour has been blest | M |
The harvest time is past But there remaineth | N |
The well stored treasure house the hidden seed | O |
That dead leaves help to nourish which containeth | N |
The germ of a new life that's life indeed | O |
