When the investing darkness growlsA
And deep reverberates to deepB
When keyhole whines and chimney howlsA
And all the roofs and windows weepB
Then through the doorless walls of sleepB
The still sealed ear and shuttered sightC
Phantoms of memory steal and creepB
The very ghosts of sound and lightC
Dream visions and dream voices of a bygone nightC
-
-
I see again I hear againD
Where lightnings flash and house eaves dripE
A flying swirl of waves and rainF
That storm path between Sound and RipE
I feel the swaying of the shipE
In every gust that rocks the treesG
And taste that brine upon my lipE
And smell the freshness of the breezeG
That sped us through the welter of those racing seasG
-
-
I hear the menace of the callH
To rope and rivet wheel and mastI
In the swift onrush of the squallH
The challenge of the thundering blastI
To daring men as it sweeps pastI
And in my dream I have no dreadJ
Rivet and rope are firm and fastI
The clear lights shining green and redJ
The quiet eyes of sentry watching overheadJ
-
What epic battles pass unsungK
It was a war of gods befellL
On that wild night when we were youngK
They rode like cavalry of hellL
The mighty winds the monstrous swellL
On their white horses fierce and fleetM
They stood at bay invincibleN
Where pulsed beneath our sliding feetM
The faithful iron heart that never lost a beatM
-
-
How the sharp sea spume lashed and stungK
How the salt sea wind tugged and tareO
And clawed and mauled us where we clungK
With panting breasts and streaming hairO
To our frail eyrie in mid airO
How we exulted in the fightC
With neither haste nor halt to dareO
Those Titans furies in their mightC
Undaunted and unswerving in our insect flightC
-
-
No lap of exquisite reposeP
A mortar wherein souls are brayedC
An anvil ringing to the blowsP
Whereby true men are shaped and madeC
Divinely strong and unafraidC
Such gallant sailor men there beQ
Never unready or dismayedC
Though 't's the face of death they seeQ
In cyclone fire and fog and white surf on the leeQ
-
-
Not only in the sylvan bowerO
On dreaming hill by sleeping mereO
-
-
The holy place the sacred hourO
Beset by every form of fearO
Darkness ahead and danger nearO
Sorely hard driven and hard prestC
But still unspent and of good cheerO
He finds them who can pass the testC
Who never winks an eye and never stays to restC
