All-saints' Day (1868) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF ECEC GHGH ECEC EIEJ BDBD

Never to weary more nor suffer sorrowA
Their strife all over and their work all doneB
At peace and only waiting for the morrowA
Heaven's rest and rapture even now begunB
-
So tired once long fetter'd sorely burden'dC
Ye struggled hard and well for your releaseD
Ye fought in faith and love and ye are guerdon'dC
O happy souls for now ye are at peaceD
-
No more of pain no more of bitter weepingE
For us a darkness and an empty placeF
Somewhere a little dust in angels' keepingE
A bless d memory of a vanish'd faceF
-
For us the lonely path the daily toilingE
The din and strife of battle never still'dC
For us the wounds the hunger and the soilingE
The utter speechless longing unfulfill'dC
-
For us the army camp'd upon the mountainsG
Unseen yet fighting with our Syrian foesH
The heaven sent manna and the wayside fountainsG
The hope and promise sweetening our woesH
-
For them the joyous spirit freely rangingE
Green hills and fields where never mortal trodC
For them the light unfading and unchangingE
The perfect quietness the peace of GodC
-
For both a dim mysterious distant greetingE
For both at Jesus' cross a drawing nearI
At Eucharistic gate a blessed meetingE
When angels and archangels worship hereJ
-
For both God grant an everlasting unionB
When sin shall pass away and tears shall ceaseD
For both the deep and full and true communionB
For both the happy life that is at peaceD
