Advent Hymn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK MNNM OPPOHQQH RSSR TUUT

Another mile a yearA
Pass'd by for ever And the warnings swellB
From upper heaven to darkest depths of hellB
O we are drawing nearA
-
All through the waiting landsC
Dim signs and tokens if unheeded throngD
We feel them thickening as we pass alongD
Holding out fearful handsC
-
Light which in love sent downE
That tender gleam on Eden's darken'd bowersF
When sin had breathed the blight upon the flowersF
Whereof death made his crownE
-
Light which did deign to stampG
The tables on that Arab mountain crestH
Light which in shrouded glory once did restH
On Israelitish campG
-
O day whose dawn was spreadI
Golden and clear on Judaea's terraced hillsJ
O shining noon whose wax d beauty thrillsJ
Earth and her quick and deadI
-
Come to our hearts we prayK
Through open doors let gracious gleams come inL
Fill us with light and life and let the sinL
And darkness pass awayK
-
Lord waken us who sleepM
Strengthen the feeble knees and weak hands nowN
Teach us with prayer and work to measure howN
The stealthy minutes creepM
-
Let not our lamp be dimO
When in the night we hear the footsteps fallP
Upon our threshold let death find us allP
Watching in peace for himO
Let us lie down to restH
In surest hope of endless life in storeQ
With happy reverent hands that strive no moreQ
Folded across our breastH
-
And when the angels comeR
And the sharp echo of the herald's cryS
Pierces the dark and stillness where we lieS
Cold in our sleep and dumbR
-
May we arise O KingT
In bridal garments beautiful and whiteU
And do Thou coming in Thy godly mightU
Our crown of glory bringT
