| We have heard many sermons you and I | B |
| And many more may hear | C |
| When sitting quiet in cathedral nave | D |
| With folded palms and faces meek and grave | D |
| But few like this one dear | E |
| - | |
| We ofttimes watch together 'fore the veil | F |
| With reverent gleaming eyes | G |
| While priestly hands are busy with the folds | H |
| And pant to see the holy place which holds | H |
| Life's dreadest mysteries | I |
| We watch weak foolish fingers straying o'er | A |
| The broidered boss to grasp | J |
| Vaguely at some small end of thread and twist | K |
| And shake the glorious pattern into mist | K |
| And leave us nought to clasp | J |
| - | |
| We watch with eyes dilated some strong hand | L |
| Of nerve and muscle trace | M |
| The grand faint outlines erewhile undefined | N |
| To our slow earth enfolded sense and find | N |
| The great design the shadow from behind | N |
| Dawning before our face | M |
| - | |
| But seldom do we see dear you and I | B |
| The pattern melt in light | O |
| And all the shine flow out on us uncheck'd | P |
| With eyes of soul and not of intellect | P |
| As we did see that night | O |
| - | |
| It was a summer night the sun was low | Q |
| But overlaid the sea | R |
| And made gold crystals of the wet sea sand | L |
| And drew our shadows short upon the strand | L |
| That stretched out shallowly | Q |
| - | |
| It was a Sunday night far off we heard | S |
| The solemn vesper chime | T |
| From some grey wind swept steeple by the shore | U |
| Chanting For ev er more for ev er more | U |
| While the deep sea beat time | T |
| - | |
| We wandered far that night dear you and I | B |
| - | |
| - | |
| - | |
| - | |
| - | |
| We wandered out of reach | V |
| Until the golden distances grew grey | W |
| And narrowed in the glory as it lay | W |
| 'Mid horizon and beach | V |
| - | |
| We wandered far along the lonely waste | X |
| Where seldom foot had trod | Y |
| The world behind us dared not to intrude | Z |
| The summer silence and the solitude | Z |
| Were only filled with God | Y |
| - | |
| We sat down on the sand there you and I | B |
| We sat down awed and dumb | A2 |
| And watched the fiery circle fall and fall | Q |
| Through solemn folds of purple and the small | Q |
| Soft ripples go and come | A2 |
| - | |
| There was not wind enough to stir the reeds | B2 |
| Around us nor to curl | Q |
| The sheeny dimpled surface of the deep | C2 |
| The waters murmured low as half in sleep | C2 |
| With measured swish and swirl | Q |
| - | |
| Two sea birds came and dabbled in the pools | D2 |
| And cried their plaintive cry | B |
| As their strong wings swept o'er us as we sat | E2 |
| No profanation of the stillness that | E2 |
| But added sanctity | R |
| - | |
| They flecked the crimson shallows with black streaks | F2 |
| Low wheeling to and fro | Q |
| Crying their bold sweet cry as knowing well | Q |
| It was a place where God not man did dwell | Q |
| A father not a foe | Q |
| - | |
| - | |
| Ah we hear many sermons you and I | B |
| The poor words fall and drown | G2 |
| But this whose speech was silence this has stirred | S |
| The stream of years and aye it will be heard | S |
| As when that sun went down | G2 |
