MidsummerA
We have heard many sermons you and IB
And many more may hearC
When sitting quiet in cathedral naveD
With folded palms and faces meek and graveD
But few like this one dearE
-
We ofttimes watch together 'fore the veilF
With reverent gleaming eyesG
While priestly hands are busy with the foldsH
And pant to see the holy place which holdsH
Life's dreadest mysteriesI
We watch weak foolish fingers straying o'erA
The broidered boss to graspJ
Vaguely at some small end of thread and twistK
And shake the glorious pattern into mistK
And leave us nought to claspJ
-
We watch with eyes dilated some strong handL
Of nerve and muscle traceM
The grand faint outlines erewhile undefinedN
To our slow earth enfolded sense and findN
The great design the shadow from behindN
Dawning before our faceM
-
But seldom do we see dear you and IB
The pattern melt in lightO
And all the shine flow out on us uncheck'dP
With eyes of soul and not of intellectP
As we did see that nightO
-
It was a summer night the sun was lowQ
But overlaid the seaR
And made gold crystals of the wet sea sandL
And drew our shadows short upon the strandL
That stretched out shallowlyQ
-
It was a Sunday night far off we heardS
The solemn vesper chimeT
From some grey wind swept steeple by the shoreU
Chanting For ev er more for ev er moreU
While the deep sea beat timeT
-
We wandered far that night dear you and IB
-
-
-
-
-
We wandered out of reachV
Until the golden distances grew greyW
And narrowed in the glory as it layW
'Mid horizon and beachV
-
We wandered far along the lonely wasteX
Where seldom foot had trodY
The world behind us dared not to intrudeZ
The summer silence and the solitudeZ
Were only filled with GodY
-
We sat down on the sand there you and IB
We sat down awed and dumbA2
And watched the fiery circle fall and fallQ
Through solemn folds of purple and the smallQ
Soft ripples go and comeA2
-
There was not wind enough to stir the reedsB2
Around us nor to curlQ
The sheeny dimpled surface of the deepC2
The waters murmured low as half in sleepC2
With measured swish and swirlQ
-
Two sea birds came and dabbled in the poolsD2
And cried their plaintive cryB
As their strong wings swept o'er us as we satE2
No profanation of the stillness thatE2
But added sanctityR
-
They flecked the crimson shallows with black streaksF2
Low wheeling to and froQ
Crying their bold sweet cry as knowing wellQ
It was a place where God not man did dwellQ
A father not a foeQ
-
-
Ah we hear many sermons you and IB
The poor words fall and drownG2
But this whose speech was silence this has stirredS
The stream of years and aye it will be heardS
As when that sun went downG2
