Should'st thou in grip of dread diseaseB
Foresee the day when thou must dieC
With no more hope of life or easeB
But only lingering to lieC
While torturing hours go slowly byC
Thy brain awake thy nerves aliveD
To thine extremest agonyE
And all in vain to rave or striveD
O my beloved if this should beE
Call me and I will set thee freeE

Murder And thou to judgment hurledF
Cut off from some few days of graceG
Thus will it be to that hard worldF
Which fits one law to every caseG
And dooms all rebels to disgraceG
But to us twain who stand aboveH
Conventioned rules unbound unclassedF
A solemn sacrament of loveH
More true than kisses in the pastF
Love's costliest tribute and the lastF
-

-
Thy grateful hand unclenched shall seekI
The hand that gave thee thy releaseJ
Thy darkening eyes shall dumbly speakI
Of scorching pangs that sink and ceaseJ
Of anguish drowned in rest and peaceJ
And I that terrible farewellK
Despairing but content shall takeL
Knowing that I have served thee wellK
I that would dare the rack and stakeL
The flames of hell for thy dear sakeL
-
-
-
The law may hang me for my crimeM
Just or unjust I'll not complainN
'Twere better than to live my timeM
Bereaved and broken and to waneN
Slow inch by inch in useless painN
Alone unhelped uncomfortedF
In mine own last extremityF
No faithful lover by my bedF
To do what thou would'st do for meF
And I shall want to die with theeF
