Spirit and Breath of Life whate'er Thy nameA
Bear with Thy creature ManB
That makes his dwelling place a blot of shameA
Upon the Ordered PlanB
-
Not Thy hand O Divine Designer hurledC
Athwart the starlit skiesD
One blood stained greed diseased hate eaten worldC
To shock celestial eyesD
-
Not Thy default O Beautiful this crustE
Of fratricidal crimeF
These maggot breeds of hunger and of lustE
That Thy fair work begrimeF
-
But ours who mock Thee from the highest placeG
And in the light of dayH
Who claim to lead an upward struggling raceG
And will not seek the wayH
-
Guards of the human birthright at Thy callI
A city sacked and burnedJ
Guards of the house that is the home of allI
But whence the weak are spurnedJ
-
Brothers to whom the outcast brothers cryK
As with a voice unknownL
Stewards of Nature's bounty that denyK
The lawful heirs their ownL
-
Thou that hast made us men and earth so fairM
To be so vilely usedN
Give space for late repentance and repairM
Of sacred trust abusedN
-
Give time Eternal that we stanch these tearsO
Give time to heal this soreP
That our brief speck amid the shining spheresQ
Disgrace its birth no moreP
But sail ethereal seas an orb of lightR
To bear Thy purpose onS
Until it fades into the cosmic nightR
Where the dead worlds have goneT
