A wild bear chace didst never seeA
Then hast thou lived in vainB
Thy richest bump of glorious gleeA
Lies desert in thy brainB
-
When first my father settled hereC
'Twas then the frontier lineD
The panther's scream filled night with fearE
And bears preyed on the swineD
-
But woe for Bruin's short lived funF
When rose the squealing cryG
Now man and horse with dog and gunF
For vengeance at him flyG
-
A sound of danger strikes his earC
He gives the breeze a snuffH
Away he bounds with little fearE
And seeks the tangled roughH
-
On press his foes and reach the groundI
Where's left his half munched mealJ
The dogs in circles scent aroundI
And find his fresh made trailK
-
With instant cry away they dashL
And men as fast pursueM
O'er logs they leap through water splashL
And shout the brisk hallooK
-
Now to elude the eager packN
Bear shuns the open groundI
Through matted vines he shapes his trackN
And runs it round and roundI
-
The tall fleet cur with deep mouthed voiceO
Now speeds him as the windP
While half grown pup and short legged ficeO
Are yelping far behindP
-
And fresh recruits are dropping inQ
To join the merry corpsO
With yelp and yell a mingled dinQ
The woods are in a roarO
-
And round and round the chace now goesO
The world's alive with funF
Nick Carter's horse his rider throwsO
And more Hill drops his gunF
-
Now sorely pressed bear glances backN
And lolls his tired tongueR
When as to force him from his trackN
An ambush on him sprungR
-
Across the glade he sweeps for flightS
And fully is in viewM
The dogs new fired by the sightS
Their cry and speed renewM
-
The foremost ones now reach his rearE
He turns they dash awayT
And circling now the wrathful bearU
They have him full at bayT
-
At top of speed the horse men comeV
All screaming in a rowW
Whoop Take him Tiger Seize him DrumV
Bang bang the rifles goW
-
And furious now the dogs he tearsO
And crushes in his ireX
Wheels right and left and upward rearsO
With eyes of burning fireY
-
But leaden death is at his heartZ
Vain all the strength he pliesO
And spouting blood from every partZ
He reels and sinks and diesO
-
And now a dinsome clamor roseO
'Bout who should have his skinQ
Who first draws blood each hunter knowsO
This prize must always winQ
-
But who did this and how to traceO
What's true from what's a lieK
Like lawyers in a murder caseO
They stoutly argufyM
-
Aforesaid fice of blustering moodA2
Behind and quite forgotB2
Just now emerging from the woodC2
Arrives upon the spotB2
-
With grinning teeth and up turned hairU
Brim full of spunk and wrathD2
He growls and seizes on dead bearU
And shakes for life and deathE2
-
And swells as if his skin would tearU
And growls and shakes againF2
And swears as plain as dog can swearU
That he has won the skinQ
-
Conceited whelp we laugh at theeA
Nor mind that now a fewM
Of pompous two legged dogs there beA
Conceited quite as youM
