To The Lord Falkland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEFGGHIJJKKEELL MMNNOOPPQQPPRRSSTTJJ UPVVFOR HIS SAFE RETURN FROM THE NORTHERN | A |
EXPEDITION AGAINST THE SCOTS | B |
Great is thy Charge O North be wise and just | C |
England commits her Falkland to thy trust | C |
Return him safe Learning would rather choose | D |
Her Bodley or her Vatican to lose | D |
All things that are but writ or printed there | E |
In his unbounded breast engraven are | F |
There all the sciences together meet | G |
And every art does all her kindred greet | G |
Yet justle not nor quarrel but as well | H |
Agree as in some common principle | I |
So in an Army govern'd right we see | J |
Though out of several countries rais'd it be | J |
That all their order and their place maintain | K |
The English Dutch the Frenchman and the Dane | K |
So thousand divers species fill the air | E |
Yet neither crowd nor mix confus'dly there | E |
Beasts houses trees and men together lie | L |
Yet enter undisturb'd into the eye | L |
And this great prince of knowledge is by Fate | M |
Thrust into th' noise and business of a state | M |
All virtues and some customs of the court | N |
Other men's labour are at least his sport | N |
Whilst we who can no action undertake | O |
Whom idleness itself might learned make | O |
Who hear of nothing and as yet scarce know | P |
Whether the Scots in England be or no | P |
Pace dully on oft tire and often stay | Q |
Yet see his nimble Pegasus fly away | Q |
'Tis Nature's fault who did thus partial grow | P |
And her estate of wit on one bestow | P |
Whilst we like younger brothers get at best | R |
But a small stock and must work out the rest | R |
How could he answer't should the state think fit | S |
To question a monopoly of wit | S |
Such is the man whom we require the same | T |
We lent the North untouch'd as is his fame | T |
He is too good for war and ought to be | J |
As far from danger as from fear he's free | J |
Those men alone and those are useful too | U |
Whose valour is the only art they know | P |
Were for sad war and bloody battles born | V |
Let them the state defend and he adorn | V |
