Not Fair Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEFFCCGGHHIIJK LLBACCML'T IS very true I thought you once as fair | A |
As women in th' idea are | B |
Whatever here seems beauteous seem'd to be | C |
But a faint metaphor of thee | C |
But then methoughts there something shin'd within | D |
Which casts this lustre o'er thy skin | D |
Nor could I choose but count it the sun's light | E |
Which made this cloud appear so bright | E |
But since I knew thy falsehood and thy pride | F |
And all thy thousand faults beside | F |
A very Moor methinks plac'd near to thee | C |
White as his teeth would seem to be | C |
So men they say by hell's delusions led | G |
Have ta'en a succubus to their bed | G |
Believe it fair and themselves happy call | H |
Till the cleft foot discovers all | H |
Then they start from 't half ghosts themselves with fear | I |
And devil as 't is doth appear | I |
So since against my will I found thee foul | J |
Deform'd and crooked in thy soul | K |
My reason straight did to my senses shew | L |
That they might be mistaken too | L |
Nay when the world but knows how false you are | B |
There's not a man will think you fair | A |
Thy shape will monstrous in their fancies be | C |
They'll call their eyes as false as thee | C |
Be what thou wilt hate will present thee so | M |
As Puritans do the Pope and Papists Luther do | L |
