First born of Chaos who so fair didst comeA
From the old Negro's darksome wombB
Which when it saw the lovely ChildC
The melancholly Mass put on kind looks and smil'dC
-
Thou Tide of Glory which no Rest dost knowD
But ever Ebb and ever FlowD
Thou Golden shower of a true JoveE
Who does in thee descend and Heav'n to Earth make LoveE
-
Hail active Natures watchful Life and HealthF
Her Joy her Ornament and WealthF
Hail to thy Husband Heat and TheeG
Thou the worlds beauteous Bride the lusty Bridegroom HeG
-
Say from what Golden Quivers of the SkyH
Do all thy winged Arrows flyH
Swiftness and Power by Birth are thineI
From thy Great Sire they came thy Sire the word DivineI
-
'Tis I believe this Archery to showD
That so much cost in Colours thouJ
And skill in Painting dost bestowD
Upon thy ancient Arms the Gawdy Heav'nly BowJ
-
Swift as light Thoughts their empty Carriere runK
Thy Race is finisht when begunK
Let a Post Angel start with TheeG
And Thou the Goal of Earth shalt reach as soon as HeG
-
Thou in the Moons bright Chariot proud and gayL
Dost thy bright wood of Stars survayE
And all the year dost with thee bringM
Of thousand flowry Lights thine own Nocturnal SpringM
-
Thou Scythian like dost round thy Lands aboveE
The Suns gilt Tent for ever moveE
And still as thou in pomp dost goD
The shining Pageants of the World attend thy showD
-
Nor amidst all these Triumphs dost thou scornN
The humble Glow worms to adornN
And with those living spangles gildO
O Greatness without Pride the Bushes of the FieldP
-
Night and her ugly Subjects thou dost frightQ
And sleep the lazy Owl of NightQ
Asham'd and fearful to appearR
They skreen their horrid shapes with the black HemisphereR
-
With 'em there hasts and wildly takes the AlarmS
Of painted Dreams a busie swarmT
At the first opening of thine eyeH
The various Clusters break the antick Atomes flyH
-
The guilty Serpents and obscener BeastsU
Creep conscious to their secret restsV
Nature to thee does reverence payL
Ill Omens and ill Sights removes out of thy wayL
-
At thy appearance Grief it self is saidW
To shake his Wings and rowse his HeadW
And cloudy care has often tookX
A gentle beamy Smile reflected from thy LookX
-
At thy appearance Fear it self grows boldY
Thy Sun shine melts away his ColdY
Encourag'd at the sight of TheeG
To the cheek Colour comes and firmness to the kneeG
-
Even Lust the Master of a hardned FaceZ
Blushes if thou beest in the placeZ
To darkness' Curtains he retiresA2
In Sympathizing Night he rowls his smoaky FiresB2
-
When Goddess thou liftst up thy wakened HeadW
Out of the Mornings purple bedW
Thy Quire of Birds about thee playL
And all the joyful world salutes the rising dayL
-
The Ghosts and Monster Spirits that did presumeB
A Bodies Priv'lege to assumeB
Vanish again invisiblyL
And Bodies gain agen their visibilityG
-
All the Worlds bravery that delights our EyesC2
Is but thy sev'ral LiveriesC2
Thou the Rich Dy on them bestowestG
Thy nimble Pencil Paints this Landskape as thou go'stG
-
A Crimson Garment in the Rose thou wear'stG
A Crown of studded Gold thou bear'stG
The Virgin Lillies in their WhiteG
Are clad but with the Lawn of almost Naked LightG
-
The Violet springs little Infant standsC2
Girt in thy purple Swadling bandsC2
On the fair Tulip thou dost doteG
Thou cloath'st it in a gay and party colour'd CoatG
-
With Flame condenst thou dost the Jewels fixC2
And solid Colours in it mixC2
Flora her self envyes to seeC2
Flowers fairer then her own and durable as sheC2
-
Ah Goddess would thou could'st thy hand withholdG
And be less Liberall to GoldG
Didst thou less value to it giveE
Of how much care alas might'st thou poor Man relieveE
-
To me the Sun is more delighful farrD2
And all fair Dayes much fairer areD2
But few ah wondrous few there beC2
Who do not Gold preferr O Goddess ev'n to TheeC2
-
Through the soft wayes of Heaven and Air and SeaC2
Which open all their Pores to TheeC2
Like a cleer River thou dost glideG
And with thy Living Stream through the close Channels slideG
-
But where firm Bodies thy free course opposeC2
Gently thy source the Land oreflowesC2
Takes there possession and does makeE2
Of Colours mingled Light a thick and standing LakeE2
-
But the vast Ocean of unbounded DayG
In th' Empyr an Heaven does stayG
Thy Rivers Lakes and Springs belowL
From thence took first their Rise thither at last must FlowL
