Against Hope Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEFF DDGHIIEEII EEJJBBBBKK IILLMMNNBB

Hope whose weak Being ruin'd isA
Alike if it succeed and if it missB
Whom Good or Ill does equally confoundC
And both the Horns of Fates Dilemma woundC
Vain shadow which dost vanish quiteD
Both at full Noon and perfect NightD
The Stars have not a possibilityE
Of blessing TheeE
If things then from their End we happy callF
'Tis Hope is the most Hopeless thing of allF
-
Hope thou bold Taster of DelightD
Who whilst thou shouldst but tast devour'st it quiteD
Thou bringst us an Estate yet leav'st us PoorG
By clogging it with Legacies beforeH
The Joys which we entire should wedI
Come deflowr'd Virgins to our bedI
Good fortunes without gain imported beE
Such mighty Custom's paid to TheeE
For Joy like Wine kept close does better tastI
If it take air before its spirits wastI
-
Hope Fortunes cheating LotteryE
Where for one prize an hundred blanks there beE
Fond Archer Hope who tak'st thy aim so farJ
That still or short or wide thine arrows areJ
Thin empty Cloud which th'eye deceivesB
With shapes that our own Fancy givesB
A Cloud which gilt and painted now appearsB
But must drop presently in tearsB
When thy false beams o're Reasons light prevailK
By Ignes fatui for North Stars we sailK
-
Brother of Fear more gaily cladI
The merr'ier Fool o'th' two yet quite as MadI
Sire of Repentance Child of fond DesireL
That blow'st the Chymicks and the Lovers fireL
Leading them still insensibly'onM
By the strange witchcraft of AnonM
By Thee the one does changing Nature throughN
Her endless Labyrinths pursueN
And th' other chases Woman whilst She goesB
More ways and turns than hunted Nature knowsB
