When Smoke Stood Up From Ludlow Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBB DEFEE GDDDD BHIHH BJDJK GLMLL

When smoke stood up from LudlowA
And mist blew off from TemeB
And blithe afield to ploughingC
Against the morning beamB
I strode beside my teamB
-
The blackbird in the coppiceD
Looked out to see me strideE
And hearkened as I whistledF
The trampling team besideE
And fluted and repliedE
-
Lie down lie down young yeomanG
What use to rise and riseD
Rise man a thousand morningsD
Yet down at last he liesD
And then the man is wiseD
-
I heard the tune he sang meB
And spied his yellow billH
I picked a stone and aimed itI
And threw it with a willH
Then the bird was stillH
-
Then my soul within meB
Took up the blackbird's strainJ
And still beside the horsesD
Along the dewy laneJ
It sang the song againK
-
Lie down lie down young yeomanG
The sun moves always westL
The road one treads to labourM
Will lead one home to restL
And that will be the bestL
