Once in the wind of morningA
I ranged the thymy woldB
The world wide air was azureC
And all the brooks ran goldB
-
There through the dews beside meD
Behold a youth that trodE
With feathered cap on foreheadF
And poised a golden rodE
-
With mien to match the morningA
And gay delightful guiseG
And friendly brows and laughterC
He looked me in the eyesG
-
Oh whence I asked and whitherC
He smiled and would not sayH
And looked at me and beckonedI
And laughed and led the wayH
-
And with kind looks and laughterC
And nought to say besideJ
We two went on togetherC
I and my happy guideJ
-
Across the glittering pasturesK
And empty upland stillL
And solitude of shepherdsM
High in the folded hillL
-
By hanging woods and hamletsN
That gaze through orchards downO
On many a windmill turningA
And far discovered townO
-
With gay regards of promiseP
And sure unslackened strideJ
And smiles and nothing spokenQ
Led on my merry guideJ
-
By blowing realms of woodlandR
With sunstruck vanes afieldS
And cloud led shadows sailingA
About the windy wealdS
-
By valley guarded grangesT
And silver waters wideS
Content at heart I followedS
With my delightful guideS
-
And like the cloudy shadowsU
Across the country blownV
We two fare on for everC
But not we two aloneV
-
With the great gale we journeyD
That breathes from gardens thinnedS
Borne in the drift of blossomsW
Whose petals throng the windS
-
Buoyed on the heaven heard whisperC
Of dancing leaflets whirledS
From all the woods that autumnX
Bereaves in all the worldS
-
And midst the fluttering legionQ
Of all that ever diedS
I follow and before usP
Goes the delightful guideS
-
With lips that brim with laughterC
But never once respondS
And feet that fly on feathersK
And serpent circled wandS
