When I meet the morning beamA
Or lay me down at night to dreamA
I hear my bones within me sayB
Another night another dayB
-
When shall this slough of sense be castC
This dust of thoughts be laid at lastC
The man of flesh and soul be slainD
And the man of bone remainD
-
This tongue that talks these lungs that shoutE
These thews that hustle us aboutE
This brain that fills the skull with schemesF
And its humming hive of dreamsF
-
These to day are proud in powerG
And lord it in their little hourG
The immortal bones obey controlH
Of dying flesh and dying soulH
-
'Tis long till eve and morn are goneI
Slow the endless night comes onJ
And late to fulness grows the birthK
That shall last as long as earthK
-
Wanderers eastward wanderers westL
Know you why you cannot restL
'Tis that every mother's sonM
Travails with a skeletonM
-
Lie down in the bed of dustN
Bear the fruit that bear you mustN
Bring the eternal seed to lightO
And morn is all the same as nightO
-
Rest you so from trouble soreP
Fear the heat o' the sun no moreP
Nor the snowing winter wildQ
Now you labour not with childQ
-
Empty vessel garment castC
We that wore you long shall lastC
Another night another dayB
So my bones within me sayB
-
Therefore they shall do my willR
To day while I am master stillR
And flesh and soul now both are strongS
Shall hale the sullen slaves alongS
-
Before this fire of sense decayB
This smoke of thought blow clean awayB
And leave with ancient night aloneT
The stedfast and enduring boneT
