Time And The Garden Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHIJJKKLL MNOOPP

The spring has darkened with activityA
The future gathers in vine bush and treeA
Persimmon walnut loquat fig and grapeB
Degrees and kinds of color taste and shapeB
These will advance in their due series spaceC
The season like a tranquil dwelling placeC
And yet excitement swells me vein by veinD
I long to crowd the little garden gainD
Its sweetness in my hand and crush it smallE
And taste it in a moment time and allE
These trees whose slow growth measures off my yearsF
I would expand to greatness No one hearsG
And I am still retarded in duressH
And this is like that other restlessnessI
To seize the greatness not yet fairly earnedJ
One which the tougher poets have discernedJ
Gascoigne Ben Jonson Greville Raleigh DonneK
Poets who wrote great poems one by oneK
And spaced by many years each line an actL
Through which few labor which no men retractL
This passion is the scholar s heritageM
The imposition of a busy ageN
The passion to condense from book to bookO
Unbroken wisdom in a single lookO
Though we know well that when this fix the headP
The mind s immortal but the man is deadP
